Annex Theatre: The Adventures of Herculina

Finally a story about the hard love lives of hermaphrodites!! Well sort of... For the month of March, Annex Theatre presents the dark comedy The Adventures of Herculina. Unfortunately due to my laziness, the play is no longer going on... my bad my bad. But to be honest this play was nothing to run out to. With a hermaphrodite lead named Herculina, I thought that the play was going to be a lot more hilarious but it seemed to die off by the second act. In the first act we are introduced to Herculina when she was a school girl at a nunnery. Herculina wanted to see the world and had an odd love for one of her school mates. It was very sweet, hilarious, and interesting. By the second act though, Herculina looses her love and then goes throughout the world to find her. What made it a little slow for me is that there was only 5 actors in the plays but there were about 10 different characters, being that each actor was playing multiple characters. It got confusing to me which made me loose interest. The Adventures of Herculina got a ton a praise for blurring the transgender lines (or so they say) and having a super talented playwright but it just wasn't for me.

What really got me interested more than the play was the organization called Macha Monkey. This organization is fantastic in that they want to promote the power of having female leads in plays. On their website they state:

Our Vision: Macha Monkey Productions envisions a world where fearless female voices thrive.
Hell yeah to female empowerment within the arts! If bras weren't so damn expensive now a days I would say burn them all ladies. On their website, Macha Monkey offers information about future plays, how to donate to the cause, auctions where you can win crazy prizes, and information on where you can find Macha Monkey lessons. I'm all about this company so check them out... now.
