It's pretty much confirmed that Soundgarden are coming back together for their first show in thirteen years tonight at The Showbox at The Market. If you want tickets, join in on Sondgarden's twitter-fied scavenger hunt! Find this cap. Clue #1. Clue #2. Clue #3. Clue #4. Clue #5. Clue #6.Why doesn't every band do this? (And...it's over. Before I could even post this. It's still fun to read about and I already wrote it, so it's staying damn it!

Balagan Theatre: True West

The next great play at Balagan theatre is True West. Straight from the Balagan family, Shawn Belyea and Tim Hyland directed this play that was written by Sam Shepard. The play is all about the intense relationship between two brothers Austin and Lee. Austin, played by Chris Bell, is an aspiring screenwriter who is trying to break into the show biz world and takes some time off to write and take care of his mom's house. While trying to get peace and quiet is interrupted by his older brother Lee. Lee, played by Mike Dooly, is your typical bad seed of the family that loves to gamble and drink... there is always one in the family right? This story proves that relationships, although can seem innocent, can prove to be quick hazardous to both parties.

I thought that the play hit right in the bulls-eye with showing the relationship between siblings. Personally for me, I will fight and die for my brothers but sometimes... I could just choke them to death. What I really liked about this play was that the relationship was believable. I believed that one brother just wanted to help the other and when the roles reversed (see the play to know about I'm talking about) they seemed to still want to help. I thought it was really clever and entertaining how they moved from one scene to another. This is a really intense play from yelling to breaking to binge drinking to burning toast... trust me this is a play I would for sure go see again. Balagan is presenting True West Thursday-Sunday until May 1st so be sure to get some tickets and check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Tonight, the Grrrrrrrrrrowlers at the High Dive

                                          rawr.

Wanna spend your Tuesday night doing something other than watching Biggest Loser? Git out there and check out grizzle grazzle, poppy, rocky, Dick Dale-esque, LBC group, The Growlers. I was introduced to these guys some time ago thanks to my buddy Devon at Hearth Music. These dudes have really catchy, groovy songs that sound as though they were recorded with ancient equipment but engineered to sound gritty in a good way. Maybe reminiscent of your favorite dive bar's sand covered floor? I'll provide a few tracks, but get the heck out there and see them at the High Dive for $8, doors at 8. The Growlers are on tour.

And for good measure, a weird video/performance of Sea Lion Goth Blues

OxyContin Killed My Friend, You Should Watch This Documentary

This has nothing to do with music, but currently deserves recognition. A friend of mine recently died. He overdosed on Oxycontin. We went to high school together and played golf every once in a while. Never before did I understand the seriousness of this drug and would like to share some new knowledge.

I've discovered some things about Oxycontin that are royally fucked up. Its too easy to get, way too powerful, and now causes more deaths from overdosing that any other narcotic in our country.  Sadly, pharmaceutical conglomerates are making hordes of filthy cash, while  people are becoming increasingly addicted to this drug. The drug is NOT being made in someones basement, its being distributed at pharmacies, prescribed to them by a doctor. Do you see a problem here? Everybody is making money off this situation except families that end up paying for a funeral. Did I mention the new war it creates for police, firefighters, and communities?  I can't find anymore words to explain the situation so I suggest you watch this documentary below. Please, if you or a friend has a problem with this drug, or any others, Find Help Here at Narcotics Anonymous.

Equally important, I just emailed Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell. You should too. Ask what they're doing about Oxycontin Addiction.

Ohmigodthisweek

You know what really grinds my gears? Weekend people. Why? Because I work in retail, and my Friday through Sunday involves waking up hungover, leaving my brain at home, and plastering on a smile as if your happiness is my happiness (I don't care). You know what makes me grin ear to ear? Badass shows all week long while you guys are stuck in your cubicles (you can still come out though, I only hate you on the weekends).

Tonight, Night Beats are bringing their tripped out psych blues craziness to The High Dive in Fremont. These guys are a hypnotizing combination of tribal rhythms, fuzzy blues noodling, and haunting vocals that make you feel like you're about to die in a Quentin Tarantino movie. They'll be on tour all month, so show some love and pick up a copy of their new limited edition 7" while it's still available.

Tomorrow night, French singer/actress Charlotte Gainsbourg will be appearing at The Crocodile. After having a near death experience involving a hemorrhaged head caused by a water skiing accident, she found inspiration for a new album IRM in the sounds of the MRI (IRM if you're French). Add Beck as a producer and you have a recipe for awesomeness.

Finally, wake your ass up Thursday night at The Funhouse with Android Hero. Come for the PBR induced kick-you-in-the-teeth hadcore music, stay for the hilarious witty banter in between songs.

Anna Bri at the Laughing Ladies Cafe

It's about time I found a female MC that can represent hip hop in Seattle... even if she is only 19! I found Anna Bri through The Stranger and it ended up being one of the better shows that I have been to. I know she is going to cringe when reading that her show was good only because her family and friends were the only people really there but I had fun. When Anna Bri (aka Brianna) approached me before her show she was really shy and really nervous and it seemed that I was not going to have a good time. Don't worry mama, I had a great time. Even in an intimate atmosphere, Anna Bri went on stage with the presence of a young MC Lyte and spittin' lyrics that really got you into the music. "To fingers in the sky, say goodbye to the haters. Five fingers in the sky, say hello to the haters"... or something like that. To top it off, she does her own beats which reminded me of the Bay Area so I was in love! She had some difficulties with her sound system but it didn't really seem to faze her performance. Although she was getting frustrated, she keep the show going with soon to be club bangers "Go Crazy", "Bananas", and "Mellow". Anna Bri has already been featured in a magazine as well as been requested on the radio. If you get a chance to check her out you will not be disappointed. It's not every day you meet a young female MC that can really hit you with some sophisticated lyrics. I'm excited to see her grow and her style and beats evolve. I have a funny feeling I am going to be a fan for more than a minute.

To add to the awesome MC that I got to see, it was held in a great little venue called Laughing Ladies Cafe. This cafe is in Shoreline, I know a little out of the way, but well worth the gas. Offering everything from coffee (I mean quality good shit aka not burnt Starbucks) to food and even some select beers. I got to sit and chat with the owner Angela, who was just fantastic, and found out that the cafe hosts a variety of different acts. This would be a PERFECT place for a poetry slam (hint hint). Here you can also hang your artwork, if your an artist that is. Currently she has fantastic charcoal drawings of serial killers which are a controversy within the neighborhood that Laughing Ladies are in. Word on the street is that it's a very redneck area but Laughing Ladies are doing their best to bring a little culture and variety into the neighborhood. Viva la revolucion Ladies!

Interview! Anna Bri: Young Female MC about to Blow Up

I got the exclusive on the rising hip hop youngin' Anna Bri from who influences her to what she wants to accomplish in the future. Get the inside scoop to the newest MC of Seattle.

1. What are some of your musical influences? Right now and growing up?

Growing up the West Coast music scene was popular in the 90's. I was highly influenced off my coast's music by it's self. All the West Coast music you heard. You either knew someone who was doing what the lyrics said. Or you were doing it. A lot of my other influenced consist of Aaliyah, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Will Smith, Bow Wow, Jonas Brothers, Mariah Carey, Xscape, SWV, My dad, Mary J. Blidge, Brandy, Monica, Eve, and Missy Elliot. That's just to name a few. R&B had a big impact on me with music as well as music before my time.

2. How did you get into rapping and doing your own beats?

My family is very musical. I used to just watch people. I'm a quick learner. Either if it was watching my uncles and cousins B Boxin while others flow to their beat. Or from watching my dad and his band. My sisters and girl cousins even got down. I've always been in love with music. But what set it off for me to start rapping is watching the hit show Living Single with Queen Latifah. My older sisters and cousins watched it. I used to just be quiet so they wouldn't notice me and I watched it too. The intro song before the show started I used to mumble the words with my lips and rock my body to the beat. That then for some reason made me want to rap. Then when I saw people rap battle or freestyle I joined in and came out of no where flowing. It came to me just by hearing that intro song and seeing how Queen Latifah was flowin'.

I got into making my own beats because by me being a female MC people don't take me seriously. Or they try to take advantage or don't hear me really. I always tried to get beats growing up. I always heard the your just a girl saying or the you can't rap saying. Mainly I rapped over my dads band every chance I could. So, I said forget waiting on people and me having to keep asking I said to myself let me save up money and do what I gotta do. And that's what I did. So from then on I been teaching myself how to make beats. I choose to show people better then I can tell them.

3. What artist would you consider your most similar to?

Depending on the type of beat I'm on a lot of people compare to, Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill, Shawnna, and the female version of Mikey Rocks from the Cool Kids and Bow Wow.
I just see myself as being Anna Bri cause I'm me.

4. What's next for Anna Bri? What's in your future rap journey?

I just plan on making good music. Real hip-hop music! I want my name to be remembered. So more shows, getting a bigger fan base. Getting on more mix tapes. More hit songs.  And working with other great artist. I really plan on showing people more than just talking about it. So stay up!

5. Why don't you dance onstage?

I never really liked to dance period.  I kinda gig dance you know. But really I just don't dance when I perform. Even if it's a dance song I'll gig to it and what not. But other people can dance to it. And how I gig to a song it makes people want to dance. I still entertain well by just gigin'.

Ghost of Kyle Bradford @ Chop Suey in Seattle Tonight 4/11

Tonight, instead playing video games in my underwear, eating cheetos off my couch, and watching 16 and pregnant, I'm going to go to a concert.

Meet Ghost of Kyle Bradford. The old english tattoo on that dude's stomach says "unfuckwithable" as in "Don't fuck with me DOOD, I'm unfuckwithable". Or "who does that girl think she is? Doesn't she know i'm unfuckwithable?" I'll go on record and say he coined the term? Urban dictionary shows it was created in 2003, but how old is the tattoo?

My friend says I need to hear these guys, and I trust him. I did some research and only found 3 acoustic songs on their their dirtspace.and NOT even one youtube video. What the Hell?!?! Its like they're a GHOST! HA! was that a pun? I suck.

Their music is pretty chill. Poetic like you've REALLY got to listen to make a connection. These lyrics give me the impression that they've got some deep feelings to share, and music is just their vehicle. But what the funk do I know?

playing with Young Evils, Yuni In Taxco, James Germain & the Grey Grey Days
Tonight @ chopsuey at 8pm for $8

I can't find postable/sharable music anywhere, so you can visit their dirtspace.  also see the first video that came up on youtube with a "ghost of kyle bradford" search. It has nothing to do with this band:

Sean Hayes Seattle Concert Review @ the High Dive

Welcome to another edition of my crunk concert review. Thursday I was at the Sean Hayes concert in fremont. Obviously I was feeling good. Proof? After about 6 songs, he says "Thanks for coming out! So whats up? What are you guys doing?" through the crowd I yell "JUST LISTENING TO SOME MUSIC, MAN!" everybody laughs, then we continue.

before the show my friend said to be ready for a ghostly voodoo presence on stage. So I had weird shit going for me. But guess what! When the first song came on, the crowd kinda froze. Actually they REALLY froze.  His cold ass voice just did that to a noisy bunch of hippies. Cooler than a polar bears butthole. Literally nobody was moving. I was walking forward and it felt like I was wading through dead bodies. no other way to explain.

3 songs in:
"this is the guy that makes you feel like you can be a musician. this easy listening music does that to me. even though I know it would be entirely impossible for me to create these. Have you ever thought about actually creating a song? insane.  I'm happy with every song I've heard. one jameson shot was all i needed to fall in love with this guy."

6 songs in:
"so now i'm 2jamesons and 3berrrs deep. He was basically a rapper during those last 2 songs. Now he's folk country. What can't he do! So sick! Still haven't heard a bad song."

Wow this is embarrassing:
I feel like I want this guy to play at my wedding. he's really fucking good. and I don't say that often for a guy I never listened to. seriously I'm not going to buy all six albums but I feel like I should. this sucks. Like right now I'm hearing Alabama chicken. I feel like I belong in the group of girls up front that dance like they're having 18 muscle spasms at once. The psychedelic girls. it's that good.

Final words:
"this man played for 2 hours and I only heard good Songs. I paid 70 to go to deck the hall ball where I heard 8 songs I liked throughout 4 hours. Sean Hayes played for about 2 hours and I did not hear a bad song. babes are dancing and shaking their asses more than I have seen in a ludacris video."

Recognize!
Can you see the progression of my love for this man? Go listen to every song of his @ www.seanhayesmusic.com

City Center live at the Comet

I've been listening to City Center since last summer when I had a whole lot of nothing to do at work and was in ambientish rockish exploration mode. How cool do I feel when the Fader highlights them and their awesome track (will not say where I tracked it down), Poolside? Pretty fuckin' cool. They're a pleasant blend of airy distorted guitar and a healthy dose of fuzzy pop (Fader lingo) that carries my mind off to thoughts of pillow fights with my prettiest pals in a warm tropical rain with magical  feathers that stay dry as they float to the ground without losing any of their delicate appeal.

Want to win my heart? Take me to shows. My Friday night date with a Seattle super cutie has been a major blip on the radar. Though I've been stalking City Center's 'space I failed to note their tour stops in Seattle. Aforementioned cutie however, did; throw dinner in the mix and I'm swooning. After a healthy dose of wine and a few man cans in the park we stumbled into the Comet. The room is developing; house lights blazing, my vision blurring, there's maybe thirty people here. Grab seats at the bar and order the Comet standard Rainier tallboy - I feel as though I'm not in the right place. The energy feels off; not uncomfortably off, but just... off.

After one mediocre opener and randomly bad ska/jam band thing, I'm ready and waiting for my City Center live zone out sesh. Finishing my Jameson I turn around, and note that the band on stage is City Center! At some point, the band must have made their way on stage. We try and tune in, though in reflection I'll definitely move from the bar closer to the stage, especially when there's not a crowd. The performance lacked the emotion I'm used to hearing, and I would have loved to hear some more vocals. Before we know it their lengthly 35-40 minute set (note sarcasm) was over and I'm perhaps, over enthusiastically irritated that it is. I just can't believe that with all the buildup I'd created it was so short. But really, no less sweet.

I'm not sure what the future for these guys holds, nor can I advocate that you see them unless you have good company by your side to keep you happily unaware. And unless you're seeing them tonight in Portland or Olympia tomorrow they're off to finish the rest of their tour on the West/Southwest so catch them on the 'space and check out their track:

Music Tip From a Nerd | NerdCore Coming to Seattle

I got an email from my brother who happens to own a few computer companies and has a computer repair blog. A genre of music exists called Nerdcore Hiphop. Think of the nerdiest people from highschool and imagine lyrics they would like to hear about random video games and computers and shit. That's nerdcore hiphop. If ludacris played World of Warcraft, programmed computers, and had a PHD in American literature, he would probably be a nerdcore artist.

To get the full understanding, I watched the called nerdcore rising on netflix. I didn't find the music very good, but it deepened my appreciation for the art. People are still going out and creating music they like!!! More importantly, they're being recognized for it. So fucking sick. MC Frontalot is the subject of the documentary and he's coming to Seattle soon.

Here are teaser's from his whole new album:
Your Friend Wil | 02:32
80085 (TEASER) | 01:09

Frontalot will be @ the High Dive in Fremont on May 8th.

Oldie but a Goodie - Beeda Weeda

Just wanted to let Seattle into the world of East Oakland royalty. While cleaning and having my iPod on shuffle, this song came on and just brought me back. Beeda Weeda is a classic Bay Area rapper and puts on a sick live performance. The video for "Turf's Up" is classic Bay Area with ghost riding the whip, stunnin' in yo whip, and drinkin' from a jug... love it! Also watch out for some familiar faces representing. I posted the video to make your day a little bit more hyphy. Just letting you into my world, I feel we are at that point in our relationship.

Studio Seven knows what they are doing

So Studio Seven doesn't host a ton of hip hop events but when they do book people it is the cream of the crop. Last Thursday I had the pleasure of going to a show for the first time at Studio Seven and I was really impressed. The venue is huge with a awesome balcony scene for the alcoholics and a decent size stage. Also side note for the drinkers: the "bartenders" that serve the drinks serve them with love (i.e you can say how much soda you want with your whiskey). I went to see the Crowd Control Tour that Kidz in the Hall is headlining featuring 88 Keys, Izza Kizza, and Donnis. Unfortunately I was late, naturally, so I missed 88 Keys but I got to see the rest. Izza Kizza killed his live performance. Him and his hype man were dancing around stage, shakin' dem dreds, and getting crazy their whole set. They really got the crowd going and kept repeating how much they love Seattle so fingers crossed they come back soon. Donnis was alright... he sort of sounded like Lupe Fiasco but had the girls vote. Not to be overshadowed, the Kidz in the Hall tore it up. They had a beats table, what I think was a high hat, and tons of energy. I was front row which payed off cause one of them bent down and sang in my face... sigh, it was so nice. The only thing about the night that sort of bothered me was that the hosts of the night Blue Scholars weren't really doing much. I don't know if they did in the beginning and I just missed it but in between bands, they only got on stage once which really slowed down the show. Also my camera completely died and deleted some pics so my bad for the few pics.

Side note, what I was most shocked about was the amount of people that were there. For such a big venue and huge acts like Kidz, there was only about 50 at the most there. I don't know if it's a promotion problem or maybe the word isn't getting out there quick enough or maybe people have no idea who these acts are and need to see the light. Well Seattle, your girl's here to spread the word. Look to me as sort of your hip hop guru. Consider my recommendations and I will lead you to a path of booty poppin', beats bumpin', rhyme spittin' in the land of all that is hood. If that's not your style, don't be scared... open up your mind and expand your horizons. At the end of the day, we all need to support local artists so put on some gold fronts and lace up them high tops, it's time to represent Seattle. I got yo back boo!

Dog Shredder Bring the \\m// @ Black Lodge 4/9

So it sucks that Black Eyes & Neckties and Cicadas broke up, but with every death comes new life and all that hippy shit. Dog Shredder are now in full swing and they're punishing ear drums all over the PNW. This Bellingham trio takes the act of "tearing it up" to a whole new level. Their spastic, thrashy metal attacks your every sense with machine like precision as if they're terminators sent from the future to destroy the human race with a sonic auditory assault. I'll take my chances tomorrow night at Black Lodge as they appear with Lozen, Victory & Associates (Oakland), and Cold Lake. I have a feeling this show is going to be packed, so bring a chin strap unless you want to be scouring through all the jaws on the floor for your own.

Sean Hayes @ The High Dive in Fremont

Tonight. Thursday. 4/8/2010. @ the High Dive in Fremont for $15

Run Wolves Run
This is the NEW ALBUM
Meet Sean Hayes. I just did. On his website you can listen to his music for free. My friend dan sent me an email and said "DUDE, I JUST SAW THIS GUY SEAN HAYES AND HE BLEW MY MIND, LIKE SERIOUS MIND BLOWN SHIT GOING ON. YOU GOTTA SEE HIM".  This guy has 6 albums which is like twice as many as Snoopdogg. Actually, if you made an album out of good Snoop songs, you'd probably only get half an album. What do you think? will my mind be blown? Or will I fall asleep mid concert? i'm going tonight. Come hang out if you want.

Edward Sharpe Take My Heart, ya' Weirdo

Blair's been riding the Sascrotch wave for some time so here we go, i'll take a stab at it, but only in the form of HOW COULD YOU HAVE FUCKING MISSED THESE GUYS? Much love bro, seriously.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros hit the tour circuit this year with their first full length album, Up From Below. Basically, Edward Sharpe is this guy lead singer Alex Ebert's like, alter ego or some shit. Alex used to be in this kickass band, IMA RObOt.  He broke up with his girlfriend, moved out of their spot, joined a 12 step for addiction, and created this dude, Edward Sharpe as a coping mechanism or whatever. Make a long and boring story short, Alex Ebert  is now Edward Sharpe, tours the country with his hickster crew singing tunes, and created the amazing song, Home. I can't get it out of my head. It's like, hickster folk crack. Peep the vid and check them out, I guess, at the Sascrotch Festival. Hot and heavy pumpkin pie, chocolate candy, Jesus Christ, indeed.

Police Teeth Return! @ Sunset Tavern 4/8

Remember that one time you were in a crosswalk and some asshole who could only be described as "Cousin-It having an epileptic seizure" almost turned you into roadkill with his giant van? Well that asshole was me, and I didn't see you because I was busy having my own one-man freakout party to Police Teeth's Real Size Monster Series, a CD that I've had in almost constant rotation since I first saw them at The Funhouse back in August. As my luck would have it, they soon went on a six month hiatus from live shows, leaving me to the aforementioned pedestrian-endangering freakouts. Lucky for all you Seattle foot soldiers, the streets will be short one asshole Thursday night while I'm at The Sunset in Ballard geeking out over the long overdue return of Police Teeth. If you've never heard them, their songs are endlessly clever lyrics floating on top of a hot mess of post-punk inspired guitar layered beautifully over bombastic drumming with catchy sing/chant-a-long choruses that will be stuck in your head for days. These songs are performed with an air of ferocity and enthusiasm that demand attention. Trail of Dead fans, eat your hearts out. According to their latest DirtSpace, this show means their new album should be released in the next few months. Pedestrians beware.

Head Wound City, Holy Shit

visual headwound

Ever feel like punching someone in the stomach followed with an uppercut to the face? Banging your head against a neon graffiti brick wall? Have those days when you want to fuck shit up and need a little motivation? Feel the need for an erratic dance/thrash party? Listen to acidic, thrash metal, high energy awesomeness, Head Wound City. These skull fucking indie rockers have been blowing my mind lately; pretty sure my office mate hates me and is plotting her revenge in the form of a dubstep audio marathon.

Now, while I'd say I can  hang with the heaviest of metal, and have on more than one occasion been seen at the Comet, Funhouse and Studio 7, I don't like all of it. Too often it seems repetative, unoriginal, predictable, and just... what the fuck? Head Wound City in contrast to my metal, and general boredom, keeps my mind spiraling around and down like a bad acid trip that I curiously enjoy because it's so unstable. I don't know if these dudes have an album or what, so I've been reverting to the 'space. Radical Friends is a pretty kickass song if you can get past the almost full minute of distortion; the drums on that track are amazing. Michael J Fux feat. Gnarles gets pretty..... gnarly. ha. ha. It's a crazy beat that ends up in a blabbering of vocals and guitar picking; pretty rad rock out song. Favorite track on the 'space is, by a long shot, Prick Class which has this grimy guitar spinout mid song and your classic heavy metal guitar riff's to close it out; old school meets Monster/vodka swilling new school.

While I love them so, i'll probably never get to see them live. I wrote to their label, Three One G (Blood Brothers, Camera Obscura, Ex Models and more) confessing my love for the band; they responded that this band was never more than an awesome one time collaboation. They got together once, for a week, wrote some tracks, played one show, shook hands and called it good; these dudes are punk as fuck.Fuck yea.
sorry for all the profanity but these guys lead me to understand that cursing is totally necessary.

Fave track: Prick Class

Get Slammed at Re-bar

Lyrically slammed that is. I just found my new favorite spot to go to and it's a little tucked away bar, that I literally drove by twice, called Re-Bar. Okay I know that I am fairly still new to the area and every new place that I go to seems to be my new favorite but I'm really impressed with you Seattle. Now I understand how you all make it through the weather! Every Tuesday night Re-Bar fills in the joint with their poetry slam night. Now for all of you who don't know what a poetry slam is it's where poets go on stage, perform a piece, and get judged to move on to the next round. So pretty much 10 become 5, which then become 3, and then a winner is picked. You can always tell the pros from the amateurs because the pros go up there with no paper to read off of, just all raw emotion. I wish I had the guts to go up on a stage and perform a spoken word piece... damn you nerves! What's also great about poetry night is that they always highlight a poet, who is usually not from here. The last time I went the poet was a cutie from New York, Adam Falkner (179th street what what...had to rep my fam fam). Adam was a natural performer, adding in some comedy in between his poems, and then was all soul when he performed. Ohhhh child, I was light-weight in love for about an hour and I'm positive I was not the only one hypnotized by him. I've posted some of his videos below so you all know what I'm talking about.

Now the poetry slam is right up my alley but if that doesn't interest you, Re-Bar has a ton more to offer. They host a TON of DJ's, who according to the bartender, are the shit. What I'm excited to see is the very drag show by Miss Dina Martina who is suppose to be just a riot and performs every Saturday night. I see me going to this bar a lot more in the future. Yay drunks!
